Keeping Your Rental Unit Organized

Do’s

  • Make a detailed plan as to how you’re going to arrange your items so you don’t have to reorganize them again.
  • Place your items in a freestanding shelf to keep them organized.
  • Label the boxes on all six sides and keep a list for easy reference. This will save you time when you’re looking for something particular.
  • Store frequently used items at the front of the unit so you can find them easily.
  • Put small colored stickers on the cords of disassembled units like computers and stereos. This will save you the hassle of trying to figure out what goes where when it’s time to reassemble your electronics.
  • Use the original boxes to store your items to find them easily.
  • Place out of season clothes in accessible spots in case you leave belongings in storage longer than anticipated.
  • Use pallets, 2x4's, or plywood to keep your items off the floor of the storage unit.
  • Utilize all the space in your unit, but leave an aisle in the center so that you can walk around to find what you need.
  • Put the heavier boxes at the bottom and the lighter ones at top. This will prevent boxes from being crushed.
  • Cover your belongings with moving pads, sheets, or light blankets to protect them. Check your unit at least once a month.
  • Disassemble bigger items such as tables and bed frames to save space. For easier reassembly, you can wrap and label all the pieces, put the hardware in bags, and mark each one accordingly.
  • Clean, dry, and leave appliances ajar before storing them to prevent mildew.
  • Store couches at the end of the storage unit and stack chairs one by one to maximize space.
  • Use the inside of appliances and drawers to store smaller items.
  • Place paper pads in between furniture when stacking to avoid scratching.
  • Store mattresses and box springs on long edges. You can also wrap them for protection and elevate off the floor by using two to three 2 x 4's cut to one foot long.
  • Store mirrors and paintings on end, not flat.
  • Pack books flat to protect their spines.
  • Rub a small amount of machine oil on metal tools, bicycles, and equipment to prevent rusting. You can also drain and clean them from all debris before storing.
  • Tape and wrap collectibles and breakable items with bubble wrap or unprinted paper to protect them.
  • Group similar items together and mark the boxes accordingly.
  • Store clothing and draperies in wardrobe boxers on hangers to retain their original shapes.
  • Use Rubbermaid containers to store your items since they have tight fitting and stackable lids.
  • Keep the more valuable items in the rear of the unit. This will prevent others from seeing them easily.
  • Alert the manager immediately if you see any potential threat or suspicious activity.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings when you are in your unit.
  • Purchase our insurance for your items that are worth storing.

Don’ts

  • Do not use plastic to cover your belongings since it retains moisture.
  • Do not store any food items to prevent any unwanted pests.
  • Do not make boxes too heavy to lift, especially when packing books.
  • Do not assume that your homeowners or tenant’s insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. Purchase the insurance in case of unexpected events.
  • Do not give out any information about your password or gate code to anyone who does not have access to your storage unit.
  • Do not use printed newspaper for wrapping to prevent the ink from smudging into your belongings.
  • Do not store any toxins or flammable items such as paint, oil, or gasoline.
